I first heard this haunting Richard Thompson song performed by the English Folk singer Sandy Denny. It tells the story of a man who goes out walking and he meets a raven. The raven tells him that he will kill his beloved. He goes mad and kills the bird, when it is lying on the ground, he looks closer and sees that it is not a bird but his beloved that he has murdered.
